چکیده

Lanthanide borosilicate glasses containing Pu and the nonradioactive analog element Ce were subjects of an x-ray absorption spectroscopy investigation to quantify +3/+4 ratio these redox-sensitive elements. The data show that dominant oxidation states are +4 for +3 Ce. also indicate reductive potential can be quantified from a solution chemistry method adapted glass chemistry, although allowances must made composition. These therefore used formulate compositions processing schedules lead controlled state in melts. Furthermore, is poor behavior melts suitability surrogates assessed by evaluation approach presented here. demonstrated this paper estimate range multi-valent elements as functions temperature composition with only single redox couple.

Reactor-Grade and Weapons-Grade Plutonium in Nuclear Explosives

The most common isotope, plutonium-239, is produced when the most common isotope of uranium, uranium-238, absorbs a neutron and then quickly decays to plutonium. It is this plutonium isotope that is most useful in making nuclear weapons, and it is produced in varying quantities in virtually all operating nuclear reactors. As fuel in a reactor is exposed to longer and longer periods of neutron i...

Plutonium-Xenon systematics of Angrites

Introduction: Angrites are igneous meteorites that crystallized very early in the solar system, ~10 Ma after CAIs, as also implied by the presence of now extinct short-lived radionuclides such as Mn, Sm and Pu [1]. Fission Xe was used to calculate Pu-Xeretention ages of eucrites, relative to that of Angra dos Reis (AdoR) [2]. AdoR has an absolute Pb-Pb age of 4557.8 Ma [see 1 for ref.]. Most eu...
